Selvino is a small village about 50 km North West of Milan. The double terminated rock crystals of this locality, so called “Lombard diamonds”, are well known for collectors of Italian minerals.

The village Selvino is located on a hill aside the Val Serina, North of Bergamo. Leaving the Selvino to the West, you are passing the locality just after leaving the village – on the slope below the last buildings. The quarz crystals are spread like potatoes in the soil. There are several situations, where you can find them on the side of the road or on molehills. Especially the excavation of nearby located construction sites brought up nice pieces during the last years.

Some fresh collected double terminated quartzes up to 20mm.

Some fresh collected double terminated quartzes up to 20mm.

The average size of Rock crystals in the region is in a range between few millimetres and about 4 cm. The quality of is going down rapidly with bigger crystals. In some rare cases bigger crystals were found. The author found pieces up to 12 cm. Usually only the smaller quarz crystals in a range up to 20 mm have the typical diamond like quality. Several times the crystals can be found as smaller groups which lead into very aesthetical specimens. In some rock crystals, small inclusions can be observed. Beside liquid and gas, bitumen can be found as inclusion in the double terminated crystals. Especially the black bitumen brings up nice phantoms.

More info to this locality can be found in the Lapis magazine 03/99.
